Barrister, discrimination lawyer, and author of Future Politics: Living Together in a World Transformed by Tech, Jamie examines what technology has done to society and what the future of power, democracy and justice might look like.

Biography

Jamie Susskind is a barrister and the award-winning author of Future Politics: Living Together in a World Transformed by Tech. A former Fellow of Harvard’s Berkman Klein Center for Internet and Society, he writes and comments extensively on how changes in technology and behaviour will affect the interplay of democracy, power and justice.

Future Politics won the Estoril Global Issues Distinguished Book Prize 2019, as well as Book of the Year that same year in both the Evening Standard and Prospect. Described as “a formidable achievement” by The Guardian and as steering “a course to the future that is as convincing as it is shocking” by The Sunday Times, it addresses some of the most pressing concerns in business, politics and society today. Whilst state and market were the two great powers of previous eras, and most debate was around which should be responsible for what, the new challenge is to understand how much of life and the world should be given over to technology. Jamie argues that this is the most vital question we face, and that politics needs to focus on the positive and negative power of technology to shape the world.

As a barrister Jamie works in the fields of business and employment law as well as public and human rights. He writes and comments widely on democracy, technology and justice, and has written for The New York Times, the Daily Telegraph, Wired and the New Statesman. He has spoken at events for some of the world's largest tech firms, as well as many popular literary festivals.
