This JLA Speakers Breakfast looked at how leaders build trust, share a vision, and create an exceptional culture. Two of the most respected leaders in their fields; one, a former Director General of MI5, the other a former CEO and acclaimed TED speaker, gave their thoughts on the challenges facing all leaders, from newly elected presidents to department managers.

The speakers were:
Baroness (Eliza) Manningham-Buller – Eliza was Director General of MI5, and worked for the Security Service for over 30 years. She led an organisation under extreme public and political pressure. She did so whilst motivating staff, defending the organisation, and maintaining a clear moral and practical purpose. Now a crossbench Peer, Eliza is also Chair of the Wellcome Trust, the world’s second largest distributor (behind the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation) of science and medical research funding.

Margaret Heffernan – with a successful business career on both sides of the Atlantic, Margaret is now one of the most widely admired commentators on modern leadership. Having served as a CEO for a range of companies, most notably in the tech sector with CMGI, she is ideally placed to see inspiring new ideas as well as common misconceptions. An acclaimed TED speaker and author of books including Wilful Blindness and A Bigger Prize, she tackles the received business wisdom of competition, top-down leadership, and transparency.
