At the time of her election, Mhairi was the youngest MP elected to the Commons in almost 200 years. She quickly proved herself with a series of speeches, proving herself as a passionate advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, mental health, and women's rights.
Mhairi Black is the former Scottish National Party MP for Paisley and Renfrewshire South, a seat she held from 2015 until she chose to step down at the 2024 General Election. She was elected to the seat at 20 years old, unexpectedly defeating the incumbent Labour MP. Campaigning on Scottish independence, social justice, and anti-austerity, she became the youngest MP elected to the House of Commons since at least 1832. She was also the SNP Deputy Leader in Westminster.
As an MP, Mhairi became known for her passionate speeches, as well as for her commitment to her constituency. Her maiden speech, which was highly critical of the UK Government’s approach to welfare and austerity, was widely acclaimed by the media. Her parliamentary career was marked by a commitment to these issues, as well as other social causes - including LGBTQ+ rights and mental health awareness. She was a vocal supporter of Women Against State Pension Inequality (WASPI), who campaigned for the rights of women who, due to the changes in the state pension age, faced a significant financial hit.
In speeches, Mhairi reflects on her journey in Westminster, offering a look behind the curtain of politics. She offers her insights into leadership, and discusses the importance of social justice and equality.
