As British Political Correspondent at The Economist, Matthew offers his insights into the latest developments behind the scenes in UK politics. He offers a behind the scenes look at the latest headlines - and offers his thoughts on what policy will mean for business.

Biography

Matthew Holehouse is British political correspondent at The Economist, where he covers the latest developments in Westminster, interviewing high profile political figures, and capturing the major trends in politics. A major focus of his work currently is the prospect of a Labour government: what it would mean for businesses, the practice of government, and Britain’s growth prospects.

For his work at The Economist, Matthew was the winner of the Comment Journalism category in the the British Journalism Awards 2023, which recognised his coverage of the Conservative Party under Rishi Sunak - with the judges noting that his work provided “unrivalled and influential coverage of the undercurrents driving the Conservative Party’s languishing poll ratings”.

His other areas of focus include UK-EU relations and the rise and fall of nationalism in Scotland. He is the author of Blighty, the Economist’s weekly email on trends in Britain.
Prior to joining The Economist, Matthew was the Senior Correspondent at MLex Market Insight, where he provided specialist coverage for banks, law firms and corporates, where he won another British Journalism Award. He previously worked at The Telegraph for six years, where he was Brussels correspondent and Political Correspondent.
