Chartered Psychotherapist Jennifer Cox co-hosts the podcast Women Are Mad, as well as being the author of the acclaimed book Women Are Angry, which looks at the social phenomenon of a culture which teaches women to suppress their emotions - and what can be done about it.
Jennifer Cox is a psychotherapist, co-host of the podcast Women Are Mad, and the author of the book Women Are Angry: Why Your Rage Is Hiding And How To Let It Out.
Jennifer began her career in forensic psychology, which saw her working with male offenders who had committed violent offences - the emotional trigger behind which was often rage. When she began working with female clients in her private practice, she was surprised to find similarly angry feelings within them. However, she noticed that in these clients, this rage manifested itself differently. Instead of being released outwardly on the world, it would instead be suppressed and take shape physiologically (for example, as chronic pain or fatigue) or psychologically, as anxiety or depression.
Having noticed this, and galvanised by the murder of Sarah Everard, Jennifer founded the Women Are Mad movement in 2023, which aims to encourage women to get in touch with their repressed anger and other negative emotions. In the podcast of the same name, Jennifer, alongside her co-host Salima Saxton, speaks with a guest (including the likes of Jameela Jamil, Jess Phillips MP and Cally Beaton) to discuss her feelings, taking anger as a launchpad for the conversation.
Alongside this, Jennifer authored Women Are Angry. Forensically charting the social conditioning women face at every stage of their lives, which teaches them to suppress their emotions and not make a fuss. The book has been widely lauded - including being cited by The Times as the self-help book of 2024.
